The
“hottest”
technology in server management is virtualization. Server
virtualization takes advantage of multi-core processor servers or
“host”
systems that allow a number of
“guest”
systems to run on the same piece of server hardware using the same or
separate disk drives. One physical server can function as multiple
virtual servers.
While the basic
technology is not new
–
mainframes have done this for generations
–
virtualization is being used to reduce server
“bloat”
and to drive down IT capital and operating costs. Additional benefits
of virtualization include easy server creation with the ability to
“clone”
servers and
“migrate”
virtual servers from one host to another. Server virtualization doesn't
have to cost
“an
arm and a leg”
either as there is free-to-use server virtualization software or
“hypervisors”
from several open source projects and proprietary vendors.
Server virtualization
can mean lower energy costs too. Many computer rooms have a number of
single-purpose servers that are idle most of the time. These idle
servers are
“burning”
CPU cycles that are using a lot of electricity to run and keep cool.
There is something you can do about it.
