The era of isolated
networks protected by virtue of their isolation are gone. Everything is
potentially connected (wired or wireless) to everything else. You need
to keep the bad guys out without making it impossible for your people to
use your systems or for your customers to do business with you.
It doesn't mean you need to allow everything. Far from it. You need good
security at the gateway(s) to your network. You need to manage the
identities of users and customers. You need to control Internet access.
You need to retain messages from your email servers. You need computing
policies that everyone understands and supports. You need to manage your
PCs and servers without running around the shop or hopping in the car.
You need to backup critical systems regularly and have a plan to
recover them. You need to consider open source alternatives to
proprietary software. You need to think about driving down the cost of
operating a computer room. You need to think about containing Windows and
Windows applications on easy to administer terminal servers to drive down
licensing costs. You need to think about the computing resources someone
needs to do their job and to provide those resources at an acceptable
cost.
Don't have time to
do all of that thinking and run your organization or business? I'm not
surprised. That is why you need me working with you.
