Groupware collaboration servers evolved from email servers once it became apparent that email was not the most ideal way for teams to work together. Groupware applications feature threaded messages or discussions, shared notes, shared documents and shared calendars.

Today, groupware platforms are server based, web based and peer-to-peer (P2P). You can choose to manage your own groupware servers internally or go peer-to-peer or subscribe to a groupware application hosted by an application service provider (ASP) on the Internet.

Groupware also includes the Wiki (Hawaiian word for "quick"), which is a popular Web-based tool that allows any number of users to collaborate on creating documentation or a knowledge base. Some web sites are even set up as a Wiki.  Wikipedia is perhaps the best known Wiki on the Internet.
